Oscillation searches via neutrino-electron scattering.

چکیده
Several years ago Rosen and Kayser' pointed out that vz-v, oscillations could alter the observed cross sections in neutrino-electron scattering experiments. Their basic point was that cr(v, e) is about six times larger than o.(v„e ) due to the weak-charged-current amplitude which contributes to the former but not the latter. So, if vz-v, oscillations occur during source to target traversal, one will measure what appears to be an enhancement of cr(" zv"e) and a decrease in o("v,"e). (The quotation marks indicate that the initially pure neutrino beam may have evolved to a combination of v„v„, etc. , due to oscillations. ) Such an effect could confuse the interpretation of neutrino scattering data in, for example, determinations of sin t9~ or searches for extra Z' bosons. Of course, once such a possibility is recognized, those measurements can instead be used to search for oscillations. In this paper, the Rosen-Kayser scenario' is reexamined for the purpose of seeing whether it can compete with more direct probes of oscillations. We shall show that present (and past) o(v„e) (o.(v„e)) experiments are not nearly as sensitive to v„-v, (v„-v, ) oscillations as dedicated oscillation experiments. As a corollary, one can be confident that the average value sin OII =0.223+0.018 presently extracted from o.(v„e) [cr(v„e )] data is relatively free of uncertainties from oscillations. However, a recently proposed high-statistics LAMPF (Clinton P. Anderson Meson Physics Facility at Los Alamos) experiment that would determine sin HII, to +0.002 via a precision measurement of the ratio

Exploring New Features of Neutrino Oscillations with a Triton Source and a Large Spherical Tpc
with maximum neutrino energy of 18.6 KeV . Such low energy neutrino oscillations can only be detected via neutrino electron scattering. The novel feature is the fact that the cross section is sensitive to both charged and neutral currents. Thus one can simultaneously probe the electron neutrino disappearance as well as the appearance of the other two flavors. By folding the differential cross s...
متن کاملOverview of Physics at a Muon Collider * I Introduction
Muon colliders offer special opportunities to discover and study new physics. With the high intensity source of muons at the front end, orders of magnitude improvements would be realized in searches for rare muon processes, in deep inelastic muon and neutrino scattering experiments, and in long-baseline neutrino oscillation experiments. At a 100 to 500 GeV muon collider, neutral Higgs boson (or...

I review the main features of the nuclear response extracted from electron scattering data. The emerging picture clearly shows that the shell model does not provide a fully quantitative description of nuclear dynamics. On the other hand, many body approaches in which correlation effetcs are explicitely taken into account lead to a satisfactory account of electron scattering observables. The pos...

For neutrino scattering from polarized electron, the weak interaction term in the cross section is significantly suppressed by the polarized term. The magnetic moment term does not receive any correction from the electron polarization. Hence, the study of the magnetic moment of neutrinos through scattering from the polarized electron leads to a stronger bound on the neutrino magnetic moment com...
